Natural Resources and Environment and Public Policy (MS/MPP)
The School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) and the Ford School of Public Policy (FSPP) offer a dual degree program, leading to the Master of Science in Natural Resources (MS) and Master of Public Policy (MPP) degrees. This joint degree is designed to be a 70 credit-hour program.
Program Overview
A small number of qualified candidates pursue concurrent work in natural resource and environmental issues and public policy. Students are provided with the analytical skills, scientific foundation, and socio-behavioral understanding needed to become effective environmental and natural resources policy practitioners. The program produces graduates well-trained in advanced analytic methods and policy processes and well-informed on the structure, functioning, and management of environmental problems.
Course of Study
Students admitted to the combined program are required to complete the first year courses in one school during the first year and to complete the first year courses at the other school in the second year. Students may begin at either school. During the third year of the program, students are permitted to elect courses in either school and are generally not restricted in their choices beyond fulfilling the required course work. Each school will apply its own deferred admission standards to students who elect to take the first year at the other school. Students enrolled in either program can apply to the other during the first year of study, but not later.
Degree Requirements
The Rackham School of Graduate Studies guidelines allow dual degree students to double count one-sixth of the total credits normally required to complete both programs. Students may integrate the 48 credit-hour MPP program with the 36 credit-hour program (totaling 84 credit hours) into a 70 credit-hour program, with 14 credits double counted. The student must still meet all the basic requirements of each program.
Students admitted to this dual degree program must satisfy the following:
Master of Science (SNRE):
- At least 19 NRE credit hours
- Fulfill the NRE subplan-specific requiremen
- Two analytics courses (one may need to be statistics)
- At least 3 hours in SNRE outside of one’s Plan
- At least 4 cognate course hours
- Integrative master’s opus
Master of Public Policy (FSPP):
- At least 33 FSPP credit hours
- Pub Pol 529 - Statistics (Fulfills Analytics/Statistics requirement. NRE 438 fulfills FSPP requirement)
- Pub Pol 555 - Microeconomics A (Fulfills NRE
- Microeconomics 570. NRE 570 fulfills FSPP requirement)
- Pub Pol 573 - Microeconomics B (Fulfills NRE Analytics requirement)
- Pub Pol 580 - Values, Ethics, and Public Policy
- Pub Pol 585 - Political Environment of Policy Making or Pub Pol 560 Foreign Policy (Pub Pol 585 fulfills NRE 562 requirement. NRE 562 fulfills Pub Pol requirement.)
- Pub Pol 587 -- Public Management
- Participation in the Integrated Policy Exercise (IPE)
- Ten week public-sector internship (Written work might be reformulated to fulfill SNRE master’s opus requirement. Likewise, SNRE master’s opus might be used to fulfill FSPP internship requirement.)
Admission Requirements
Students must file separate applications to and be admitted by both schools. An application fee must accompany each application.
