Kathy Jacobs is the Assistant Director for Climate Assessment and Adaptation at the Office of Science and Technology Policy. She is on a mobility assignment from the University of Arizona, where she is in the department of Soils, Water and Environmental Science. Jacobs is Director of the National Climate Assessment and part of a team working to develop a national adaptation strategy. Jacobs recently chaired a National Research Council panel on climate change adaptation within the America's Climate Choices Project, and has served on six other Academy committees.

Senator Tom Daschle, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader and author of Getting it Done: How Obama and Congress Finally Broke the Stalemate to Make Way for Health Care Reform, will deliver the keynote address at the 2011 V-BID Center Symposium.

The Environmental Law & Policy Program will present Lisa Heinzerling, Professor of Law at Georgetown University, on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 12:10 p.m. in Hutchins 250. She will discuss Climate Change at EPA. The talk is free and open to the general public.

Carl Lagoze, an associate professor of information science at Cornell University, will address 'They Are Not Sheep: Recognizing the Diversity of Scholars and Scholarship in the Design of Cyberinfrastructure.'

The speaker says that the historical record of cyberinfrastructure development is filled with numerous examples that paid too little attention to the socio-cultural context of their deployment. Overly simplistic assumptions about the uniformity of the target audience or the constancy of the organizational framework into which they were meant to fit have frequently compromised the success of the work. As the late Susan Leigh Star observed in 1999, 'Infrastructure is a fundamentally relational concept, becoming real infrastructure in relation to organized practices.'
