Susan M. Dynarski quoted in Detroit Free Press about higher standards for state education exams

Susan M. Dynarski was quoted in a Detroit Free Press article called, "State raises bar on tests to prepare kids for college, careers." The article discusses a recent decision by the Michigan State Board of Education to raise the passing scores on two state exams—the MEAP and the Michigan Merit Exam.

According to the article, the state says changes are necessary to bring Michigan exams in better alignment with the tougher National Assessment of Educational Progress exam, the largest standardized assessment of American students. More rigorous testing in Michigan will better prepare students for college and careers even though more students will—at least initially—fail the tests. "The new policy is more honest about how much our children are learning," Dynarski told the Free Press. "It's unfair to tell parents their kids are proficient when they're not. Parents—and teachers—need accurate information if they are going to support children effectively."
