April 30, 2013

A report co-authored by Susan M. Collins will be featured in a new publication celebrating National Academy of Sciences (NAS) 150th anniversary.

The report, "Aging and the Macroeconomy," was produced by the National Research Council's Committee on the Long-Run Macroeconomic Effects of the Aging U.S. Population, of which Collins is a member. It was released in September 2012 and outlines the effects of an aging U.S. population on the nation's economy and the implications for federal programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The NAS is society of distinguished scholars established by a Congressional Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. According to its mission statement, the NAS is "charged with providing independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology."
