Hanson says Trump is using law enforcement reform to split Americans

August 7, 2020

In an article about pro-Trump Michigan Republicans in Mlive, the Ford School’s Jonathan Hanson is quoted as saying that the Trump campaign is using law enforcement reform to split Americans into two teams -- those who support the police and those who don’t. It’s a cultural wedge issue on “steroids,” he says.

Hanson said voters saw similar tactics during the 2018 midterm elections when Trump warned of criminal migrants approaching the southern border.

“I think it’s very difficult to portray (Biden) as being some sort of political revolutionary who’s dangerous,” Hanson says. “This rhetoric about chaos and lawlessness in the suburbs, it’s a transparent attempt to play on people’s fears and prejudices. To me it reflects a sign of desperation.”
