Brian Jacob quoted in Time article about incentive-based education research

At Time’s request, Brian Jacob reviewed the findings of an incentive-based education study for an article called "Should kids be bribed to do well in school?" The article describes a rigorous and unique experiment by Roland Fryer, Jr. that tested the educational benefits of rewarding kids with money. According to Jacob’s assessment, the effects were "substantial." If incentives are designed wisely, it appears, payments can indeed boost kids' performance as much as or more than many other reforms you've heard about before — and for a fraction of the cost, he told Time.

MPP student Christopher Mueller wins Dow-sponsored team sustainability innovation competition

MPP student Christopher Mueller's interdisciplinary team won a $10,000 prize from the 2010 Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge.
Mueller's project, called "Hippo Water International: A Simple Design Can Change the World," was created by graduate students from the Ford School, the Ross School of Business, and the School of Natural Resources and Environment. The team’s project presented a business model to help developing countries manage water resources more efficiently.

Ford School BAs invited to join Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society

Ten Ford School undergrads were invited to join the 2010 Class of the University of Michigan’s chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society.
Seniors Hannah Clark, Evgeny Magidenko, Jonathan Newman, Irine Sorser, Sonya Suter, Gabriel Tourek, Ashley Weech, Angela Wyse, Zachary Zucker, and Erica Zviklin were invited to join the society and attend its 102nd Annual Initiation Program. The 2010 inductees join two other Ford School seniors, Lesley Plimpton and Rochelle-Leigh Rosenberg, who were inducted in the 2009 class.

Shobita Parthasarathy's work cited in landmark gene patent case ACLU v. Myriad Genetics

A New York District Court judge cited a University of Michigan expert's research this week in a landmark case invalidating patents on the BRCA genes, which are linked to increased susceptibility for breast and ovarian cancer.
In ruling the patents invalid because the genes are "products of nature," Judge Robert Sweet extensively cited a declaration in support of the plaintiff's case from Shobita Parthasarathy, assistant professor at U-M's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

National Academy of Public Administration inducts Barry Rabe as a fellow

Barry Rabe, professor of public policy at the University of Michigan's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, has been inducted as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.
In addition, Rabe will collaborate with more than a half-dozen other fellows to assess and provide recommendations for the organizational design of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Service.

In a Wall Street Journal article, “Obama Steps Up Confrontation,” Robert Axelrod explains President Obama’s recently aggressive tack with Republicans as ‘classic game theory.’ Since the passage of the recent health care bill, the White House has taken a decidedly aggressive tone with opponents in an effort to rally supporters claims the article. Confrontation is sometimes necessary when cooperation breaks down to present a credible potential threat and get the two sides to re-engage, Axelrod told the WSJ.

Shobita Parthasarathy spoke to NewScientist about a recent geoengineering research conference that gathered scientists and policy experts to discuss the creation of a voluntary set of standards to guide international ‘planetary rescue plan’ research in the event of catastrophic global warming. Policy experts at the conference encouraged geoengineers to share research plans with the public before engaging in large scale testing of projects with a potential global impact. Just running tests sends a signal that scientists are interested in a future for geoengineering, Parthasarathy told NewScientist. "The intention is to expand the process. The path will have been set."

Michael Pan, Senior Policy Advisor to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, will deliver the Charge to the Class at the 2010 Ford School commencement ceremonies.
Pan is a 1999 MPP alumnus of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and received his BA in political science from Swarthmore College. He has forged a distinguished and impactful career in international human rights work.

Michigan's local government leaders express an alarming lack of trust in state government leaders in Lansing and significant dissatisfaction with their job performance, a new study shows.
This distrust raises questions about the potential success of state-level policy solutions that depend on local implementation, according to a new Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS) by the University of Michigan's Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP).
The survey looked at trust in state government and evaluations of job performance for Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Legislature by local government officials statewide.

U-M researchers to use MacArthur grant to study recession’s effect on Southeast Michigan

University of Michigan researchers will study the effects of various housing problems—including foreclosures and evictions—and the economic crisis on vulnerable workers and families living in hard-hit southeast Michigan.
A new $750,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to the National Poverty Center, located in the U-M Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, was one of 13 grants distributed to researchers to explore how housing matters to children, families and communities. The research grants were selected from 217 applicants.
