Input-Output Table Documentation

The database includes the input-output transaction matrices from approximately 30 countries, collected over the years primarily from national sources and concorded to the industry classification of the Michigan Model.

A single file, all_io.txt contains all of the input-output tables that we have concorded to the Michigan Model specifications. Each country's table occupies 32 lines of the file, each starting with a string of 13 characters: ISIC.cty.year, where cty is a 3-character country code and year is the year of the IO table. Countries are listed with their codes and the source of the data (where we still have it) below.

The 32 lines for each country consist first of one line for each of the 29 Michigan Model sectorscontaining value of sales by that sector to each of the intermediate and final users that are the columns of the table. These 29 lines are then followed by three more lines that report payments by intermediate users to "primary factors," which are indirect business taxes (IBT), property (PRP), and labor (EMP).

Each line of the file includes, after the 13-character identifying string, a 3-character industry code and then up to 33 data values. The first 29 of these are intermediate transactions: sales by the row industry to the column industry. The last 4 are sales to final users: consumption, investment, net exports, and government.

Data are usually in local currency for the year indicated, and therefore are not comparable across countries. In our use of the model, these tables are scaled to match industry outputs for the base year of the application, and therefore only the proportions in the IO tables play any role.
