The course will focus on insecurity globally with special attention to the onset, processes, and outcomes related to interstate and civil war. We will consider how accelerating challenges like technological and climate change intersect with these forms of political violence. Because policy requires knowledge of context, we will discuss cases of wars historically to the present day. Students will have the option of pursuing a research track or policy track, completing either a research paper or threat assessment with a corresponding policy response. Throughout the course, students will improve their substantive knowledge about global insecurity, historical and contemporary instances of war, and policy responses to it.
