This course examines the origins, development, and impact of selected civil rights policies concerning race. Major topics include employment, education, voting, and housing. Special attention will be devoted to affirmative action policies in both employment and education. The course is designed to help students acquire a basic understanding of the statutes, regulations, and rulings governing these areas of civil rights; it also aims to provide a foundation for thinking through contemporary controversies.
