Why is "Restorative Justice" necessary now?

Today, the rate of recidivism in the United States is over 50% and roughly 25% of the world's inmates are incarcerated in the U.S., which has exceeded U.S. incarceration capacity. In this situation, the United States is pursuing countermeasures against recidivism and mass-incarceration. One of the ways to mitigate those problems is Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice originally started to improve upon the inadequacies of the criminal justice system in terms of the needs of victims and offenders and focused on individual cases.
Therefore, we have decided to choose “Facilitation of Social Reintegration with Restorative Justice/ Possibility of Advanced Application into the Policy Field” as a topic of discussion.
Join us for a chance to listen to a discussion of best practices in Restorative Justice from former Iowa prosecutor, J.D. Fred Van Liew. Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry L. Clayton will then join the conversation to discuss the possibility of applying the principle of Restorative Justice into the policy field.
This event is hosted by the Domestic Policy Corps and co-hosted by The Friends of Restorative Justice of Washtenaw County and the Ford School of Public Policy.
