World leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Bali, Indonesia touted the benefits of a new free trade agreement but expressed doubts on the likelihood of the U.S. agreeing to the deal. TIME magazine quoted John Ciorciari, assistant professor of public policy, on why there is hostility toward U.S. policies at the summit and opportunities for reversal.
Ciorciari stated that "promotion of free trade and investment has been the weakest pillar in the Obama Administration's Asia-Pacific strategy" but that APEC offers the best opportunity for "rebalancing." He also noted that U.S. goals for the summit were generally modest but "a start in reversing the momentum away from free trade and investment."
