Presidential campaign season brings about many profile pieces on candidates, assessing personalities and backgrounds as a match for the Oval Office. In once such piece published August 27 by the Associated Press’ Sharon Cohen titled “Elizabeth Warrens’ rise started by looking at the bottom,” Michael Barr, dean of the Ford School, shared his experience of working with presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Barr worked alongside Sen. Warren during his time as assistant secretary of the treasury for financial institutions in the Obama Administration. "She's really effective in communicating with the public, which most academics are not," Barr shared. While Sen. Warren is known for her folksy manner, Barr argues this plays in her favor when speaking with the general public. Barr continued, "I think she has a real way of connecting with ordinary families."

Michael S. Barr is the Joan and Sanford Weill Dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the Frank Murphy Collegiate Professor of Public Policy, the Roy F. and Jean Humphrey Proffitt Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, and the founder and Faculty Director of the University of Michigan's Center on Finance, Law, and Policy. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. At the Law School, Barr taught Financial Regulation and International Finance, and co-founded the International Transactions Clinic and the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project.
