Kowalski paper an NIHCM award finalist

March 10, 2021

Health economist Amanda Kowalski, the Gail Wilensky Professor of Economics and Public Policy, with her primary appointment in the U-M Department of Economics and a courtesy appointment at the Ford School, is a finalist for the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation’s 27th Annual Research Award. One of only five papers chosen from a competitive pool of nearly 100 entries, her publication, “Long-term Impacts of Childhood Medicaid Expansions on Outcomes in Adulthood”, appeared in the Review of Economic Studies in March 2020. Her co-authors are Ithai Lurie and David W. Brown from the Office of Tax Analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

“We have a 27-year history of honoring the best health reporting and research, but by any measure, this year’s finalists are extraordinary. Our entrants placed a strong emphasis on high-impact work on disparities in at-risk populations, racial justice, and improving a broad spectrum of health outcomes. Our research finalists conducted rigorous studies that will likely spur innovation and improve care,” said NIHCM Founding President and CEO, Nancy Chockley.

The independent judges panel of health care experts will meet on March 25th to select a winner; the winning entry will be announced in April and will receive a $15,000 to $20,000 cash prize.
