Lewis to moderate U-M Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture

December 20, 2022

The theme of the 37th University of Michigan Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture is “The (R)evolution of MLK: from Segregation to Elevation,” which will explore King’s activism after 1964, highlighting the evolution of King’s primary focus on segregation to a broader, more radical, and revolutionary platform that included health, economics, and education. Dr. King’s quote, “White Americans must recognize that justice for black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society,” defines him as a front-runner in Critical Race Theory.

Ford School professor Earl Lewis will moderate a conversation with between Dr. Althea Mayban, physician, chief health equity officer, and vice president of the American Medical Association, and Edward Buckles, director and Best New Documentary Director Winner of The Albert Maysies Award for the documentary, Katrina Babies. The event will take place January 16, 2023, at 10 AM in Hill Auditorium.
