International migration crisis virtual simulation

All Ford School students and U-M students interested in international policy can register.

National Museum of American Diplomacy and the Weiser Diplomacy Center will host a virtual simulation on an international migration crisis facilitated by Sonia Urbom, Senior Advisor for Education Programs at the National Museum of American Diplomacy. This virtual simulation is open to all Ford School students. In this hypothetical simulation, students will take on the roles of key stakeholders as they negotiate a diplomatic resolution to the current crisis and the factors that led to it. The exercise will develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, persuasive communication, and global competence.

From speaker's bio

Ms. Sonia Urbom is currently serving as a Senior Advisor for Education Programs at the U.S. Department of State, National Museum of American Diplomacy. She most recently completed a tour as the first detailee from the U.S. Department of State to the Peace Corps.

Sonia became a Foreign Service Officer in 2002.  She served as the Chief of the Professional Fellows Division in the Office of Citizen Exchanges in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State in Washington and the Spokesperson for the American Institute in Taiwan. Sonia previously worked as Assistant Information Officer in Beijing and Ukraine, Vice Consul in Beijing and Barbados, and as a Program Officer in the Office of International Visitors in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Before joining the Foreign Service, Sonia served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine. Sonia has a B.A. in international studies from the University of Washington and a Master of Education from Harvard University. She speaks Russian and Mandarin Chinese.  

Sonia is married to another Foreign Service Officer and they have two children, two rescue dogs from Taiwan, and a cat from Beijing.
