Congratulations to Sam Gringlas, a graduating senior at the Ford School, who has received an Avery and Jule Hopwood Award and a Helen J. Daniels Prize for "Substratum," a three-essay portfolio including "In Flint, lead contamination spurs fight for clean water." Gringlas, who was managing news editor of The Michigan Daily, was recognized on April 19 at U-M’s annual Graduate and Undergraduate Hopwood Awards Ceremony.
Since 1931, U-M’s Hopwood Awards Program has recognized more than 3,200 writers with $3 million in prizes. Famous U-M alumni who have received the award include Robert Hayden, Arthur Miller, and Marge Piercy. The Hopwood Awards are made possible by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 U-M graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother.
