Melvyn Levitsky appeared on “Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson” for the podcast’s October 31 episode, “Mueller charges and what they tell us about investigation.”
Levitsky, a retired career minister in the U.S. Foreign Service and former U.S. ambassador, joined Washington Post reporter Libby Casey, Wayne State University law professor Peter Henning, and former FBI agent Andy Arena to discuss Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the investigation’s recent charges brought against former Trump campaign officials.
The episode explored where the line blurs between normal and extraordinary meddling and what makes an attempt to influence a campaign illegal.
“Is this collusion or not? Well, sometimes collusion is in the eye of the beholder,” Levitsky notes. “It’s typical of Russian security forces . . . to influence both the course of United States policy and in other countries. . . . It’s a little hard to see where the fit is in terms of collusion at this point, but it looks like Mueller is going to be digging into this pretty hard. So there are a lot more things to come as we go forth.”
