President Joe Biden awarded Earl Lewis, Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Public Policy and founding director of the Center for Social Solutions, with the National Humanities Medal. Lewis is the first U-M faculty member to receive the award, which honors those who deepen the nation’s understanding of the humanities and broaden citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy and other humanities subjects.
