Dual degree and certificate programs

A leader in cross-disciplinary research and teaching

Request information

The University of Michigan is home to nineteen graduate schools and colleges, 250 degree programs, 6,700 faculty members, and dozens of world-class academic departments.

Remarkably low barriers between schools make it easy for students to register for courses in any department—accessing the full range of the U-M's intellectual, cultural, and social resources.

The Ford School offers dozens of dual degree options with business, law, public health, social work, urban planning, environment and sustainability, and more. The programs enable students to complete work on two degrees simultaneously.

Not sure whether a dual degree is in your future? No need to decide before coming to Michigan; our students can apply to other schools after enrollment at the Ford School. The application process is straightforward, and our academic advisors are here to help.

Dual degree programs

The majority of the dual-degree programs listed below will take approximately three years to complete, with the exception of the Medicine and Public Policy program (which will take five years) and the Law and Public Policy program (which will take four years). The degree requirements vary by program. The typical sequence of study is to spend one year taking courses in one program, the second year in the other program, and the third year splitting courses between both programs.

Students must satisfy the degree requirements of each school and should consult with their advisor about graduation requirements for each degree. See the requirements for each program below.

Please see the Rackham Graduate School Academic Policies for additional dual/joint degree information requirements. When courses from both schools are taken in one term, tuition will be assessed at either the school's rate or the Rackham rate, whichever is higher.

"Being able to bring together different skill sets and knowledge bases—public policy and public health, in my case—is valuable to the people and organizations I work for; they get two perspectives and sets of expertise for the price of one. A dual degree can be uniquely beneficial.”
