Dean Michael Barr reflects on Supreme Court decision on travel ban

June 27, 2018

Dean Michael Barr's message to the Ford School community, following the June 26, 2018 Supreme Court travel ban decision:

Dear Ford School community,

Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the President’s authority to ban travelers from certain majority-Muslim countries, is deeply disappointing to me. In my judgment, the decision and the ban are damaging to the inclusive and equitable nation we aspire to be, and to institutions of higher education in the U.S.

Let me say loudly and clearly:  All of our students belong here.

President Schlissel has released a statement on yesterday’s decision, and I and the Ford School stand in full agreement with his sentiments. We encourage you to read the statement here: https://president.umich.edu/news-communications/statements/statement-on-june-26-2018-supreme-court-travel-ban-decision/

We, at the Ford School, will continue to welcome students regardless of their nationality or religious status. We are committed to building an inclusive, diverse, and equitable community that is built on productive and respectful collaboration and that serves as inspiration and training ground for the next generation of public policy leaders. This is a time of great urgency for universities—and public policy schools in particular—to speak up for and demonstrate the value of such a community.
