Joan and Sanford Weill Hall

Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, Joan and Sanford Weill Hall opened in August 2006. The 85,000-square-foot building on the northeast corner of State and Hill streets offers state-of-the-art classrooms, event spaces, and comfortable niches for student-faculty study and collaboration.

Weill Hall's highly visible location at a gateway to central campus positions it as a central venue for public discussion of current national and international policy issues. Its stately facade of brickwork and stone complements the style of other longstanding University of Michigan landmarks, including the Michigan Union, the Michigan League, Lorch Hall, and the Hatcher Graduate Library.

Weill Hall's three primary wings are arranged in a U-shape to maximize the amount of natural light inside. These wings embrace an east-facing courtyard on the second level. Throughout the building, alcoves and lounges of various shapes and sizes provide the informal meeting spaces that are crucial to faculty-student collaboration and community.

Weill Hall building hours

  • Monday - Friday
    • 7:30 am - 6:00 pm: Doors unlocked, open access
    • 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm: Card access only, U-M community via MCard
    • After 7:30pm: Ford School community only via MCard
  • Saturday-Sunday: 24/7 Ford School community only via MCard

We ask that faculty, staff and students vacate the building by 12:00 midnight to facilitate cleaning and other health and safety measures. 

Reserving space requirements

Space in Weill Hall is only available for reservation by members of the Ford School community for activities related to the mission of the Ford School. Rooms may be reserved for a maximum of four-hour blocks of time. Recurring meetings will also extend no further than four occurrences at a time. After the fourth occurrence, you may request the space again. For non-Ford School organizations, a minimum of four Ford School students must be in attendance. Non-Ford School organizations may reserve space from October 1 through April of the current academic year. Please send room requests at least one business day (Monday - Friday) before you need the space.

How to reserve space

Rooms are available for study or group meetings if you have two or more people in your group. Personal meetings will be approved on a case by case basis. Before requesting a room, please verify the room you want is available at the time you need it by clicking “Request a room” then click the “Availability” tab. The room calendar for that room will now display. You can click on each reservation in the space to show its beginning and end time. Once you know the time you need is available, click the back button and click reserve. You will complete a web form that will be sent electronically to Ford School Facilities. The request will be processed and you will be notified of approval typically within 4 hours. You do not have the room reserved until you receive your email confirmation. Note: Room requests are not processed after hours or on weekends.
