In this section of 510, students will analyze the politics of foreign policy processes, especially concerning international security. We will examine central foreign policy debates related to international security, grand strategy, alliances and cooperation, hierarchy and anarchy, interstate war, civil war, economics and trade, migration, technology, and climate from the perspective of the U.S., other countries, and international institutions. We will apply our understanding of these ideas to complex crises such as intervention in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the global climate crisis, tools of economic coercion, and post-civil war reconstruction and state-building.
