Structured as a seminar and writing workshop, this course centers on writing in three domains of policy change: the third sector (e.g., non-profits, advocacy organizations, think tanks), legislative and regulatory bodies, and the individual citizen in the culture at large. You'll choose policy issues you care about to develop three assignments in which you create, critique, and revise:
1. An issue campaign— written, visual, and digital artifacts—for an organization in the third sector
2. Written legislative testimony or regulatory comment, with an accompanying one-pager, for legislative or regulatory decision makers
3. A personal essay on a policy issue in which you have a personal stake
Along with enriching your research, critical thinking, and policy writing skills, this course is intentionally designed to help you build a practical and durable writing process that will serve you throughout your education and your future career.
