Join Dr. Dirgha Ghimire, Executive Director at the Institute for Social and Environmental Research - Nepal (ISER-N), for a conversation about ISER-N’s research programming. Ghimire will share how this research can inform policymaking in Nepal and other low-income country contexts. During the seminar session, Ghimire will also discuss with students his decision to pursue a research-focused career, pivoting from his previous policy practitioner role with CARE International.
Prof. William Axinn, Interim Director of the International Policy Center (IPC), will serve as moderator.
About the Speakers
Dirgha J. Ghimire is a Research Professor at the University of Michigan's Population Studies Center and the Executive Director at the Institute for Social and Environmental Research – Nepal (ISER-N). His research delves into the interplay between socio-political, economic, familial, and environmental changes, focusing on their impacts on public health, child health and socioemotional development, education, and population mobility. Utilizing a life course framework, he employs mixed-methods, multi-level designs, and advanced technology for innovative data collection. As the co-director of the renowned 29-year Chitwan Valley Family Study (CVFS), Ghimire has significantly advanced interdisciplinary research and capacity building in low- and middle-Income countries. His work emphasizes rigorous research integration, methodological innovations, and the training of new generation scientists, dedicated to disseminating knowledge and fostering informed discourse on local to global challenges.
William Axinn, Interim Director, International Policy Center (IPC), Professor of Sociology and Public Policy and Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan
Axinn is a sociologist and demographer who implements studies of families to investigate the links between population processes and health and well-being. Axinn directs the CVFS, a longitudinal comprehensive study of individuals, households, and communities in Nepal. For this recent collaboration in Ukraine, he draws on his work following CVFS families through the time of Nepal’s 8-year armed conflict and its long-term impact on family dynamics, child health, mental health, attitudes and beliefs, and migration, education, community change.
