Abstract The federal Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is the premier national example of a non-regulatory environmental policy, and it illustrates well both the potential and limitations of using information disclosure to achieve policy goals. The TRI was adopted in 1986 as an amendment to the federal Superfund law, and since 1988 we have had annual reports on the release of over 650 toxic chemicals by some 20,000 industrial facilities around the nation.

Scott Carrell, Associate Professor of Economics at UCDavis Social interest in problems such as domestic violence is typically motivated by concerns regarding equity, rather than efficiency. However, we document that taking steps to reduce domestic violence by reporting it yields substantial benefits to external parties. Specifically, we find that while children exposed to as-yet-unreported domestic violence reduce the achievement of their classroom peers, these costs disappear completely once the parent reports the violence to the court.

The University of Michigan and the Ford School are planning a series of activities to welcome the classes of 1963 and 2003 back to Ann Arbor. The Reunion Weekend will offer alumni the chance to reconnect with old classmates and visit campus. Equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter will recount her story of discrimination at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the subsequent legal battle that resulted in the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Her experience resonates with women everywhere who continue to struggle for equity in the workplace.
By most indications, the U.S. university system is producing more PhDs than the market for research positions demands given current levels of funding for research, both by government and by the private sector. A major reason for this overproduction is that demand is based on the need to staff labs of faculty researchers with graduate students and postdocs, not upon demand for future researchers.
