Mel Levitsky quoted in Detroit Free Press article about trial location for terror suspect

December 29, 2009

Mel Levitsky supports intentions to try Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian man accused of attempting to blow up a Detroit-bound flight, in U.S. civilian courts. As Levitsky explained to the Detroit Free Press, “If a person violates our laws, he should be tried in civilian courts.”

If Abdulmutallab is tried in civilian court, the general public will have greater access to the details of the trial – including explanation of the charges, evidence, and the investigation. "The public deserves to have this information," he said. "Certain kinds of classified information could be held back if it's thought to compromise our national security."
