Ford School MPP student Alexis Guild was quoted in a Detroit News story about the Peace Corps 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago today, at 2 a.m., then senator John F. Kennedy spoke to students on the steps of the Michigan Union and announced his intention to create a program—the Peace Corps—to help "build cultural bridges and spread peace."
Over two thousand University of Michigan alumni have served in the Peace Corps, including Guild. Guild spent two years in Guatemala teaching health education and explained her experience to the Detroit News as a "a great way to work and live in a community." She went on to explain that she got a lot out of the Peace Corps program because it enabled her to cross cultures and taught her "adoptability and flexibility."
