Elizabeth Stamberger (MPP/MBA student) and Charlotte Mack (MPP/MS student), with team members from business and natural resources, won the 2009 University of Michigan Net Impact Sustainability Case Competition.
This two-round competition invited teams to showcase their strategy, marketing, and operations skills to present a solution for a real-life business challenge: how can individual U-M buildings increase recycling rates and reduce waste? The competition encouraged teams to understand how to motivate building’s users and generate behavior change.
In their winning project, “Recycling Plan for East Quadrangle,” Stamberger and Mack proposed a strategy that would make recycling more convenient at the residential hall, empower and support leaders, and engage users.
The winning team earned a monetary award, and their ideas will be incorporated into the spring 2010 University of Michigan’s Recycling Champions competition.
The competition was judged by representatives from Accenture and the U-M Waste Management office and sponsored by the Ross Student Government Association and the Student Sustainability Initiative.
