Three Science, Technology, and Public Policy (STPP) students/researchers have been awarded the 2011 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellowships.
Chris Avery (PhD '10 in Chemistry, STPP certificate), Leah Nichols (STPP postdoc), and Mitaire Ojaruega (PhD '10 in Applied Physics, STPP certificate) were selected for these highly competitive fellowships, which place scientists and engineers with leadership attributes, strong communication and problem-solving skills, and an interest in public policy within either federal agencies or Congress. Ojaruega will take a position within the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Policy Division. Avery will be a legislative advisor to Congress (office to be determined) and Nichols will work on issues related to health, education, and human services (placement to be determined).
The AAAS Science and Technology Fellowship program aims to partner science with policy by placing scientists in positions within the U.S. government where they can share their knowledge and analytical skills, and learn first-hand about policymaking at the federal level.
