Assistant Professor of Public Policy John Ciorciari was quoted Wednesday by AFP News on the potential impact of Saturday's Taiwanese presidential elections on relations between Taiwan and China.
President Ma Ying-jeou, who has encouraged economic cooperation with China, is facing a tough challenge from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which seeks Taiwanese independence.
"Even if the DPP wins, it is quite unlikely to declare independence or take other precipitous steps that would invite conflict," Ciorciari told AFP News. "As Taiwan's principal ally, the United States will work closely with either party and will almost certainly counsel caution and restraint."
