In the latest installment of "Policy Points," Sheldon Danziger predicts a rise in the poverty rate for 2012. The U.S. Census Bureau will announce the latest poverty figures next week.
Danziger asserts that while poverty levels in 2011 were high, they would have been higher still if not for provisions made under the 2009 stimulus bill. In 2012 those provisions--such as extended unemployment insurance--will end.
Danziger says that "we live in a world where a rising tide no longer lifts all boats" and that explicit government policies are needed to raise employment and wages and lower the rate of poverty in the U.S.
