Ciorciari joins UN General Assembly debate on global criminal justice

April 12, 2013

John Ciorciari's participation in a thematic debate before the UN General Assembly was discussed in a press release from the United Nations as well as an article on BalkanInsight.com. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, heads of state, and justice ministers attended the event that focused on the "Role of International Criminal Justice in Reconciliation."

Ciorciari participated in a panel focused on "justice" and spoke from his experience and research relating to the topic of justice and reconciliation in Cambodia. Ciorciari addressed the risks of hybrid tribunals by drawing on the example of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, a tribunal established to try high-ranking members of the Khmer Rouge for crimes committed between 1975 and 1979.

The thematic debate was the first such high-level event at the United Nations focused on the role of international judicial institutions in resolving post-conflict grievances.
