The Detroit Free Press cited a recent Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS) in an editorial arguing that the well-being of Michigan cities must be considered when balancing Michigan's state budget.
As explained in the editorial, Michigan communities have found themselves in tougher financial straits recently as the state has sought to balance its budget through measures that include cutting revenue sharing to cities.
According to the MPPS, which is conducted by the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP), only 43% of local leaders said current levels of service are sustainable without reform. Furthermore, 67% of respondents in larger cities said the present funding system would eventually require additional budget cuts.
Citing the MPPS findings, the Detroit Free Press editorial questions whether the state's new financial situation is indeed more stable.
