National Academy of Public Administration taps Barry Rabe for energy, environmental reviews

January 10, 2017

The National Academy of Public Administration has appointed Barry Rabe to a three-person Expert Advisory Group that is charged with conducting a performance review of the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

The bureau, which was created in response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, was designed to regulate the offshore energy and mineral extraction industry to ensure the safety of workers and the conservation of natural resources.

“This represents a Congressionally-charged review of the first half-decade of experience under this new regime,” says Rabe of the work, which will continue into 2017.

Rabe recently completed another National Academy of Public Administration leadership assignment—a Presidential transition report and briefing on energy and environmental policy concerns of relevance to the incoming administration.

Barry Rabe is the J. Ira and Nikki Harris Family Professor of Public Policy at the Ford School, an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, and a professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan.
