Name: Avril E. Prakash MPP/MBA ‘21

Organization: General Motors

Location: Detroit, Michigan

General Motors is the fourth largest automaker in the world, manufacturing vehicles in 37 countries and whose branding lineup includes Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC. Working at the headquarters in the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, I've been a Public Policy Intern for the Global Public Policy team, that handles regulatory affairs in the energy and environment portfolio. GM is committed to an all-electric future and was the first automotive company to mass-produce an affordable electric car.

Over the course of my internship, I've contributed to the strategic planning process at GM by addressing global regulatory challenges. I re-evaluated and redefined methodology for heavy duty emissions standards that delivered significant competitive advantage. I coordinated long-term planning and strategy alignment between cross-functional leadership on domestic emissions strategy.

This role was an incredible opportunity for me because it allowed me to put my graduate studies in emerging technology regulation to practical use. The Ford School's emphasis on quantitative skills and research analysis allowed me to deliver reports directly to CEO Mary Barra and the rest of the senior leadership team with confidence. This experience has confirmed my goal to pivot into the private sector and opened my eyes to the multitude of opportunities and innovation present in the auto sector.
