Checks for the recently expanded child tax credit program will be sent out this week. Luke Shaefer, the Hermann and Amalie Kohn Professor of Social Justice and Social Policy, associate dean for research and policy engagement, and director of Poverty Solutions, explained how the program will affect Detroit residents.
"It starts with a very basic principle, which says that raising children is expensive and the government and society has a reason to help,” he said. “In the City of Detroit, in particular, we are talking about more than 20,000 children who could be lifted above the poverty line."
