The New York State Senate recently approved Adrienne Harris, professor of practice at the Ford School, as Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS).

“I thank Governor Hochul for my nomination. I thank the New York Senate for their confidence and support in my confirmation to serve the great people of New York,” Harris said in a press release. “I am honored to serve as the Superintendent of the Department of Financial Services. As the first African American woman to lead DFS, I am personally committed to working with all stakeholders to build a robust, fair and sustainable financial system, creating a better economic future for all New Yorkers.”

Harris’s background in financial reform, financial technology, cybersecurity, consumer protection, and housing finance reform made her a strong candidate for the position. She has previously served as special assistant for economic policy to President Obama at the White House National Economic Council, senior advisor to the Deputy Secretary in the U.S. Department of Treasury, and represented financial institutions and other corporations as an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.

“I understand the tricks that companies play to skirt regulation and it will make me a more effective regulator,” Harris said at her hearing before the State Senate Finance Committee.
