Michelmore discusses how expanded tax credits benefited family well-being on new podcast

November 7, 2024

In a new episode of Mathematica’s On the Evidence podcast, Ford School’s Katherine Michelmore reflects on her career—from her first job as a research assistant at the Urban Institute, to her current position at the Ford School studying the effects of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC) on family well-being.

Michelmore, the 24th recipient of the prestigious David N. Kershaw Award, has focused her recent research on the temporary expansions of the EITC and CTC during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work has found that the temporary expansion of the CTC during the pandemic helped reduce household food insecurity and improved childhood health indicators.

On the podcast, Michelmore details her experiences sharing her findings with the media and policymakers, and how she gathered data to study the impact of the CTC from a private mobile app. Michelmore also poses further questions for her future research to support working parents and their children.
