University of Michigan professor Alford A. Young, Jr. has been elected as the incoming president of the American Sociological Association (ASA). Professor Young will start in his role as President-Elect in September 2025, advance to become President in September 2026, and subsequently serve as Immediate Past President in September 2027. His election as ASA President is a testament to both his exceptional leadership and profound contributions to the field of sociology.
In addition to being the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Sociology and a professor of African and African American studies, Young holds a courtesy appointment at the Ford School. Young is a prominent scholar specializing in race, culture, and social inequality. His extensive research spans multiple topics, including those related to “low-income, urban-based African Americans; employees at automobile manufacturing plants; African American scholars and intellectuals; and the classroom-based experiences of higher-education faculty as they pertain to diversity and multiculturalism.” Learn more about his work here.
