The effects of tariffs are far too complex for a simple tariff to make sense, says Deardorff

Alan Deardorff, Ford School Professor Emeritus, in a contribution for Newsweek, commented on why Trump is giving Canada and Mexico time before implementing tariffs.

"The short delay is both to give those countries more time to propose changes that he can point to as addressing his concerns, and also to give his staff time to come up with the detailed plans that will be needed to phase in the tariffs and to include exemptions to minimize their disruptive effects."
