Ford School Professor Ann Chih Lin, director of the Lieberthal Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, spoke with Spectrum Nes about President Trump's summit meeting with Chinese President Xi.
Regarding Iran, Lin said, "President Trump has said that he doesn't need help from China on Iran. China and Iran have a significant relationship, and I think if China would pressure the government of Iran that might make a difference. It's unclear how far either China feels it can go in doing so or how far the United States wants to make an issue of it."
She also spoke about the personal relationship between Trump and Xi. "It matters, I think, because President Trump is at once both somebody who really wants to be in control of everything and also somebody who has lots of differences in his cabinet about how tough to be on China. I think if President Xi understands that President Trump is in control, he will have more confidence that the China hawks in the administration won't be directing policy."
