Hanson shares insights about opening of new bridge between Detroit, Windsor

July 27, 2026

Ford School professor Jonathan Hanson comments on the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, which opened to traffic on July 27, 2026.

"The opening of the bridge comes at a very low point in relations between the United States and Canada caused by the actions and statements of President Donald Trump," he said. "Today should be a happy occasion to celebrate the enhancement of the economic ties between our countries. Instead, the uncertainty around the opening has added another chapter to the long political saga around this bridge. It's remarkable that the public interest seems to finally have won out."
