Meet the Ford School's first Online MPA cohort

January 22, 2026

This January, the Ford School of Public Policy welcomes its inaugural Online Master of Public Affairs (MPA) cohort—a group of 22 accomplished midcareer professionals committed to advancing public service. Drawn from across the U.S., these students represent a broad range of sectors: government, higher education, healthcare, law enforcement, military, and the private sector.

The diversity of professional backgrounds and geographical perspectives enriches a collaborative environment uniquely suited to tackling multidisciplinary policy challenges. The Online MPA is intentionally designed for individuals with at least five years of policy-related experience who are eager to strengthen their leadership, analytical, and communication skills while continuing to excel in their current professional roles.

Guided by Elisabeth Gerber, the program's inaugural faculty director and a recognized developer of innovative teaching approaches in public policy, students engage with a rigorous curriculum that combines interactive online learning and immersive, on-campus residencies in Ann Arbor. Students also have access to a leadership coach as well as the Ford School's Writing Center and Policy Analysis Learning Lab. The program leverages the Ford School's tradition of fostering a close-knit community, offering small cohorts and accessible faculty who support students in their academic and professional growth.

Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes shares, "Welcoming our very first Online MPA cohort is an exciting milestone for the Ford School. After years of careful planning and strategic development, it is truly inspiring to see such a talented and diverse group of students join this pioneering program. Our Online MPA opens new doors for public policy professionals, expanding access to our high-quality education while helping them develop the analytical and leadership skills needed to make a lasting impact for the public good. We are honored to support these accomplished students as they continue leading in their communities and advancing their skills and careers."

With this first cohort, the Ford School extends its tradition of excellence to a wider audience—positioning leaders to address the complex policy challenges of today. The diversity and experience of these students will enhance classroom discussions, shape practical solutions, and build a strong professional network that crosses sectors and state lines.

The application cycle for fall 2026 is now open and will close on May 1. As a result of generous contributions from Ford School partners, Nancy and Arn Tellem, and The Skillman Foundation, students with connections to Metro Detroit, whether through residency, work history, or public engagement, may be eligible for financial support.
