Michelmore's research falls into three main streams: analyzing the effects of tax credits on low-income families, evaluating the impact of education policies on access to educational opportunities, and describing socioeconomic differences in family complexity and their policy implications.

Social insurance refers to programs designed to help workers and families manage risks—such as illness, disability, or unemployment—by providing financial protection and preventing loss of income. NASI is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to understanding how these systems contribute to economic security.

"The Ford School is so fortunate to have Katherine Michelmore on our faculty. She is a productive scholar dedicated to conducting innovative policy-focused research that has improved the lives of low-income families and children in the United States. She also brings her deep social policy knowledge and expertise regarding Social Security, workforce issues, and other social insurance and safety net systems to the classroom. She prepares students to address the complex issues of poverty and income insecurity in the real world, not only through teaching but also as a mentor to many doctoral and Master's students," said Natasha Pilkauskas, associate professor of public policy at the Ford School.

Michelmore joins other Ford School faculty, including Pilkauskas, Paula Lantz, James B. Hudak Professor of Health Policy, and Betsey Stevenson, professor of public policy and economics. Elected NASI members have distinguished themselves by improving the quality of research, administration, or policymaking in an area of social insurance. Members make important contributions to the Academy's policy, research, education, and leadership development initiatives by serving on expert study panels, task forces, working groups, and committees; speaking at conferences and other Academy events; and serving as collaborators for Academy initiatives.

About the National Academy of Social Insurance
