Media outlets throughout Michigan shared analysis by U-M Poverty Solutions that nearly 40% of state residents are struggling to afford basic needs. Amanda Nothaft, director of data and analysis, indicated that many people struggle to make ends meet and may not have the savings to weather an emergency home or car repair or medical expense.
The new research from the University of Michigan Poverty Solutions Program also show that about 13% of Michiganders live below the federal poverty line. For a family of three, that means earning less than $27,320 a year. But more than 26% of working Michiganders earn above the poverty line and are still struggling to make ends meet.
The outlets included WLNS 6 (also shared by Yahoo), WWJ Detroit, Fox 47 / WILX 10 (Jackson), Michigan Public, Flint Courier News, WDIV 4, and Arab American News. Some outlets, including Newsbreak and Mirage News, published the news release.
