July 11, 2025

Ford School economics professor Justin Wolfers makes regular appearances in the media discussing the economic implications of the Trump administration's actions, among other be seen on MSNBC and CNN, among others,  and in print in The New York Times, among others.

His high profile was recently highlighted in the prominent German newspaper, Frankfuter Allgemeine, which called him "the American left's new favorite economist." It proposes, "No one explains the insanity of Donald Trump's economic policies as humorously as he does. Yet behind his mockery lies a serious message."

The article notes Wolfers's dedication to informing the public. "On the day of the presidential election, I was still awake at midnight, wondering what my role in the world actually was...That's when I realized it was to teach the world economics. And fortunately, someone is doing a lot to increase demand."

Among the analyses they reference, the term TACO ("Trump always chickens out"), which became popular on Wall Street after several Trump retreats. "Wolfers followed up on television with another Mexican specialty. Economists, he said, are more concerned about the ENCHILADA: 'economic nationalism, chaotic handling, illogical levies, and disrupted alliances.'"

(He also coined a new acronym:  On MSNBC, he said Trump may now have the courage of his convictions to go through with his threats, which could be summed up as: TACQUITO — “Trump’s Aggressive Commerce Quest (will) Unleash Intense Tariff Orders. - see below)
