The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, published a new report, "Science: A New Golden Age," calling for billions of dollars to be shifted from academic research to tech and artificial intelligence companies.
In comments to STATNews, Shobita Parthasarathy, director of U-M's science, technology, and public policy program, pointed out that a recent PEW Research survey shows that most adults don't trust AI companies to develop and use the technology responsibly.
"One of the big problems is that we have not adequately centered social needs, social priorities, and as a result, that has led scientific institutions to be out of step. ... But this actually increases that problem."
