Unfolding as a personal meditation from the Jewish Diaspora, The Village Under The Forest explores the hidden remains of the destroyed Palestinian village of Lubya, which lies under a purposefully cultivated forest plantation called South Africa Forest. 

The Ford School co-sponsors this day-long symposium that will address the challenges of detecting child abuse.

Based on the 13 months she spent in the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut on money laundering charges, Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange is the New Black, raises provocative questions about the state of criminal justice in America, and how incarceration affects the individual and communities throughout the nation.

U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell will introduce a panel of women leaders who have served in elected office in Michigan.  Panelists will share their experiences and answer audience questions about what drove them to pursue a career in public office, how they ran successful campaigns, and what life looks like as an elected official.

Free and open to the public. About the event: 20 years have passed since the political violence in Rwanda occurred touching the lives of millions as victims, perpetrators, bystanders and refugees. While there has been a reasonable amount of attention given to the topic, there have been only a few rigorous efforts put forward to understand what took place. Interestingly, the understanding of what took place has shifted in certain respects from the earlier investigations.

Equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter will recount her story of discrimination at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the subsequent legal battle that resulted in the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Her experience resonates with women everywhere who continue to struggle for equity in the workplace.

Free and open to the public. Race and gender discrimination play an enormous role in all of our institutions, including media. This lecture will provide concepts, tools, and stories that help us close gaps and generate unity. A leading figure in the racial justice movement, Rinku Sen has positioned the Applied Research Center as a national home for media, research and activism for social change.

He is also a Faculty Associate of the Office of Population Research, the Center for Research on Child Wellbeing, and Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University. His research interests include social inequality, policy, and education. His work focuses on the social psychological determinants of the racial achievement gap.

Abstract: This paper shows that the mortgage credit boom has significantly affected urban and school racial segregation from 1995 to 2007. We develop a model of urban segregation with credit constraints that shows that easier credit can either increase or decrease segregation, depending on the race of the marginal consumer who benefits from the expansion of credit. We then use school demographics from 1995 to 2007, matched to a national comprehensive dataset of mortgage originations, to document the link between credit supply and schools' racial demographics.

Women constitute a powerful force in the electorate and inform policymaking at all levels of government. Although women continue to be underrepresented as political officeholders, there is a growing contingent of dedicated women serving their communities and challenging the status quo in local and state government. In this historic election season, with the first woman nominated by a major party as a presidential candidate, our panel will explore what it is to be among the 20% -- from the campaign trail to the daily work of governing.
