Credit Hours

The course will focus on urban policy and economic development issues in the Detroit metropolitan region. The term “workshop” is used to convey that the teaching approach is a combination of classroom seminars and interaction with policy makers and public managers in Detroit. These experiences will provide a context for teams of students to produce policy strategies focused on urban problem solving. The overall focus of the course is to utilize in depth case analysis of Detroit, compare it to cities that have made a “comeback” from decades of economic and fiscal distress, and frame the analytical work of students to produce actionable prescriptions. The course will be completed in an 8 week period which includes seminars at Ford School, meetings in Detroit, and a Spring Break trip to Pittsburgh, PA to study how that city has successfully transitioned to a post-industrial economy. Section 002 is the classroom component; section 003 is the city tour. Download Coursemart Audio
