The international security landscape is currently undergoing a series of tectonic shifts – some occurring quickly, others occurring more gradually – that are fundamentally altering the challenges facing the United States and our allies. These include Russia’s aggression in Europe, China’s continued rise as a global power, and the continued diffusion of elements of power that were once the sole dominion of state actors but are now increasingly available to non-state actors and even individuals.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin will provide her thoughts on these issues and the challenges and opportunities they present the United States, with an introduction and Q&A moderated by Ann Lin, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.
Attendance requirements
In-person attendance at this event is limited to current University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff. All attendees will be required to complete the ResponsiBlue screening before entering the building, and adhere to the University of Michigan mask policy throughout the event. Registration is required to attend.
The event will also be live-streamed for those outside of the University, or University members who choose not to attend in-person. The live-stream will appear on this page the day of the event, registration optional.
From the speaker's bio
Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin has spent her career in national service. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which took place during her first week of graduate school in New York City, she was recruited by the CIA to be a Middle East analyst, serving three tours in Iraq alongside the military. She went on to serve in senior national security roles under both presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and eventually served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs at the Pentagon.
In 2018, Slotkin ran to represent Michigan’s 8th district in Congress, which includes Ingham County (Lansing, East Lansing, Meridian Township), all of Livingston County (Brighton and Howell) and North Oakland County (Holly, Clarkston, Rochester and Rochester Hills).
In 2020, Congresswoman Slotkin won re-election, bringing her mission-focused, Midwestern pragmatism to the House of Representatives for a second term. Congresswoman Slotkin serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and the House Committee on Homeland Security, where she is the chair of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
